Anatomical Pathology is the branch of pathology that deals with the tissue diagnosis of disease. For this, anatomical pathologists need a broad-based knowledge and understanding of the pathological and clinical aspects of many diseases.
Anatomical pathology is concerned with the diagnosis of disease based on the gross, microscopic, and molecular examination of organs, tissues, and whole bodies (autopsy). The latter is an important component of the work for establishing the cause in cases of sudden or unexpected death, for examining disease progression, including the response to treatment or lack of a response. Submission of biopsies from masses or diseased organs can assist with treatment decisions and prognostication.
In Veterinary Laboratory Services, Anatomical Pathology is also one of the important teaching areas of the School of Veterinary Science and generates a substantial amount of case study materials used to educate up and coming veterinarians.
It should be noted that all samples submitted to the Veterinary Laboratory Services, and results generated, may be used post-reporting for education and research purposes.
